Australia NSW Introduces Food Waste Recycling Mandate
On March 2, 2025, New South Wales (NSW) of Australia officially commenced the Protection of the Environment Legislation Amendment (FOGO Recycling) Act 2025 (FOGO Recycling Act). Administered by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), the Act mandates the source-separated collection of food organics and garden organics (FOGO) waste from households and businesses, as well as new reporting requirements for supermarket food donations.

[Updated] PFAS Standards for Mineral Water Proposed to Align with Tap Water Quality in Japan
On February 26, 2025, Japan’s Consumer Affair Agency (CAA) released an Amendment to the Food and Additive Standards Concerning Soft Drinks (PFOS and PFOA), which introduce a new regulation regarding the permissible levels of PFOS and PFOA in "mineral water products that are sterilized or disinfected." These substances must not exceed a combined limit of 0.00005 mg per liter.

Thailand Proposes Second Draft of the Sustainable Packaging Management Act
Thailand Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) unveiled the second draft of the Sustainable Packaging Management Act. Compared to the first draft (click ChemLinked News for more details), which was released in March of 2024, this draft aims to establish a more comprehensive management system covering the entire lifecycle of packaging by clarifying responsibility allocation, economic measures, and technical specifications, so as to reduce resource waste, lower carbon emissions, and promote Thailand's transition to a circular economy.
