Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of organofluorine chemicals that have been manufactured and used in many countries for decades. They are heavily scrutinized due to increasing scientific studies demonstrating their extreme environmental persistence and potential risks to human health.
So far, most countries adopted PFAS management options following a substance by substances approach. Their regulatory efforts to control PFAS are very limited and merely focus on the most harmful PFAS groups like PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS and related compounds, which are banned globally as mandated by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. In the EU, Denmark, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands are taking initiatives to propose a full PFAS restriction that calls for the phase-out of over 10,000 PFAS substances. This marks a comprehensive PFAS regulation on the horizon.
