EU: ECHA Launches Call for Evidence on Substances in Packaging and Packaging Waste

by Lennie Tao Sep 29, 2025

On September 17, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a “Call for Evidence” to gather information on packaging, substances used in packaging and packaging waste, waste management and recycling technologies related to packaging.

This initiative is a key step in implementing the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) promulgated in February 2025, which aims to identify and potentially restrict substances of concern (SoC) that negatively impact chemical safety, reuse, and recycling. Substances in packaging may be subject to future regulatory measures – e.g. restrictions. It is therefore essential that the information used to inform such decision making is accurate and representative of the current situation regarding the current production, use and waste management of packaging materials in the EU.
