The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) in India has announced the publication of the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2023 in the Gazette of India on April 27, 2023. The amendment is effective from the date of publication.
The MOEFCC has been working towards scientific plastic waste management in India and previously introduced the Plastic Waste Management Rules in 2016, with subsequent amendments in 2018, 2021, and 2022. The latest amendment includes the following changes:
Extension of the transitional period for provisional certificates for biodegradable plastics by one year.
Relaxation of marking or labeling requirements for rigid plastic packaging.
Simplification of the registration process for producers, recyclers, and manufacturers.
Amendments to the guidelines for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Plastic Packaging.
