On December 1, 2025, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) implemented an order, which approves specific words and symbols that manufacturers may use to disclose the presence of perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in products.
The order provides clarity for industry stakeholders preparing for the state's PFAS labeling mandate. Beginning July 1, 2026, the manufacture, sale, or distribution of certain products with intentionally added PFAS will be prohibited unless the product bears a compliant PFAS label. The requirement covers a broad range of product categories, including:
Apparel
Carpets or rugs
Cleaning products
Cookware
Cosmetic products
Dental floss
Fabric treatments
Juvenile products
Menstruation products
Textile furnishings
Ski wax
Upholstered furniture
To support compliance, DEEP approved the following consumer-facing labeling phrases:
"Contains PFAS"
"Made with PFAS"
"Made with PFAS chemicals"
"Made with intentionally added PFAS"
"This product contains PFAS chemicals"
Other equivalent wording or symbols approved by DEEP upon petition
Labels must be clearly visible before sale, clearly indicate the presence of PFAS, and be durable enough to remain legible for the product's useful life.
